The European Approach :

Europeans have a more different approach when it comes to protecting the industry or the animals. The Europeans have a plan to protect the industry and animal production. But they are mostly for protecting the animals overall.  As said in The CAFO Reader "the European Union as a whole has become a blueprint for animal production, establishing an oversight system that protects industry intrests and animal welfare, the enviornment, and public health at the same time". (321) The United States are more for protecting the industry.

Creating Annotations

"The characteristic odors from CAFO's are caused by the number of contributing compounds, including volatile organic cmpounds (VOCs), NH3, and H2s" (Von Essen, Auvermann).

Von Essen, S. and Auvermann, B. "Health Effects from Breathing Air Near CAFOs for Feeder Cattle or Hogs." Journal of Agromedicine10.4 (2005): 55-64

Annotation: This source explains what the cause of the bad odor in CAFO's come from. This is good for my essay because I discuss this issue and how it brings sickness to people in the area and other problems to them and the environment.

Blog Five: The CAFO System

Human life and animal life are both non-important when it comes CAFO's. CAFO's stands for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations. Workers in these factory farms are usually immigrants, which are considered as "UN-skilled workers". Animals are continuously abused and than slaughtered just to produce meat. Workers are put to work in such horrible surroundings and positions and yet are getting paid minimum wage. Hardly enough to even take care of themselves and there families. I Believe that there are ways for this to be stopped, because meat isn't something that we all need to eat to survive, it is just something that people are use to eating on a daily basis. These meats that are making a large amount of people sick each year. They spray toxic on these animals that we are eating .. feed these animals OTHER animals .. and feed these animals there own manure. This meat is poorly taken care of after they are slaughtered and fed to us. The government that we live in knows about these conditions and what it does to people but yet it still goes on today.

Blog Four: From Farm to Fridge

This four minute video is about animals being slaughtered. It is very disturbing. It shows behind the scenes of what really goes on these slaughterhouses that a lot of people may not know about. You see a various number of workers abusing the animals in multiple ways. As in slamming baby pigs on the floor extremely hard using an extreme amount of force to having pigs hung by there legs and slicing them open from there stomachs. This video connects with the video projects because it is showing us what they have been talking about in various videos. I definitely think seeing videos such as these will change peoples food choices daily. It makes people loose there appetite quite quickly and makes you think twice of what you are eating.

Blog 3: The End Of Overeating.

In this blog I will be discussing "The End Of Overeating" by David Kessler chapter 6. This chapter is about certain foods that we eat due to our rewarding system. The rewarding system is a part in our brain that keeps us wanting. It keeps us satisfied. The body's reward system is essential to survival. When some people have emotions, whether it is a positive or negative one they will eat to make them feel better or to keep them feeling better. It keeps us coming back for more. This is due to the sugar, fat and salt. It has been researched that it is not the need of hunger in us that causes this (Kessler 30). It is the want and satisfaction in us. As studied a French experiment demonstrated that animals will work for foods that are high in sugar and fat and are not even hungry. As said on page 37, this is called nucleus accumbens" an area of the human brain that is center of reward. Also there are opioids produced by eating high-sugar, high-fat foods that can relieve pain or stress and calm us down. Many of us do not notice this because we look at this as signs of needs, when in reality it is a want. When having foods with such a high sugar and fat as kids, most of us as we get older continue to have a craving for that food. For example children who are given McDonald's and other fast food as a child keep craving these foods and wanting them as years go by. It becomes like a drug. Once you begin to have it and have that feeling of satisfaction, it keeps people coming back for more.
